ON A BIKE - HIT BY A CAR
I must have been about 10 years old,
as that’s when I got my own bike.
I was riding to school on a winter’s day that was fairly cloudy
but if it had been raining, it wasn’t then … or not much.
In those days, riding on the footpath was ‘illegal’
- one had to ‘walk’ your bike to use the paths -
so to ride a bike, one had to use the road.
There was a longish straight road to ride up before a right turn
into the road the school entrance was on.
A bit before that was a road to the left
that was a fairly main road into the ‘city centre’,
therefore fairly busy in the mornings for cars being driven to there.
As I rode through this intersection I was suddenly
knocked off my bike by a car.
Thankfully the car was only going fairly slow
and didn’t directly hit me - especially my legs.
I remember hitting the ground and lying there for a little bit,
while all manner of chaos commenced around me
to find out if I was ok and helping me to my feet -
all the while the driver profusely apologising
for not seeing me and knocking me off my bike.
After a bit of time,
I walked my seemingly undamaged bike and body to school.
I don’t recall going home for the day,
nor spending any major time in the ‘sick bay/room’.
While there was no immediately obvious injuries,
it is very plausible that some had occurred -
after all, I was knocked off my bike by a car.
