FORKLIFT SHOULDER INJURY
(Background information)
2015 at supermarket night-fill job
UNLOADING THE FRUIT AND VEGIE TRUCK
The truck had arrived a little late and with the ‘dry’ load already in,
there was very little space within the backdock just off the truck
and a long, narrow passage way down to the destination chiilroom.
I was using a walk-along powered-forklift that was about a mid range model -
that is, fairly solid and capable of lifting about 1 and ¼ tonnes/tons.
ALLEYWAY PROBLEMATIC
While this was a brand new supermarket,
the designers had used an ‘old template’ that did not allow for the new system
of storing ‘overstocks in roll cages’ rather than on a standard pallet.
This meant the backdock storage area was too narrow
to accomodate the two roll cages per space allocated for a pallet
- that is, the 2nd cage ‘stuck out a bit’ into transit alleyway -
meaning little margin for error when manoveuring the machine.
‘HAIR-TRIGGER’ AUTO-STOP
I had used this forklift many times previously and had learnt
to be careful when returning ‘fork-empty’ down the alleyway,
as the machine had a habit of suddenly stopping often,
even with a slight raise of the control/steering handle.
It was difficult not to ‘trip the hair-trigger’ when using this machine,
so my right shoulder had got a bit more injured
each time I had used it in the recent past.
REPETITIVE INJURY
This night required an at-pace unload,
so returning up the narrow alleyway was done as quick as possible -
unfortunately this meant a high chance of
one, two or more sudden stops on each ‘empty’ trip back,
with each sudden-stop making it feel like my arm was
almost being ripped out of its socket.
Over and over again.
MUCHLY-AGGREVATED SHOULDER
By the time I finished, I could hardly move my arm
- especially anywhere above shoulder height -
and was in a great deal of pain.
BURSITIS - NEEDED ‘FIXING’
The medical diagnosis confirmed by untra sound was a significant bursitis.
The doctor offered Cortisone injection - I declined.
The company offered to pay for physio -
so I tried that, but not of much help.
A more effective therapy turned out to be a therapy-combination of
‘Sole Water’, Tissalts, Kinesiology and SPC.
